THEME

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPENT GOALS AND THE PROMOTION OF FAMILY WELL-BEING: CHALENGING THE CHALLENGES

Date: 21st to 24th September 2016
Venue: UBA Hall of Fame, University of Nigeria, Nsukka

RATIONALE

Ensuring optimal family well-being and survival poses various forms of challenges. Both the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the successor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have crucial relevance to the family as both address issues that are critical to the very survival and wellbeing of individuals, families, societies and nations. In Nigeria, available report indicate that in spite of appreciable progress made at the attainment of the MDGs, some of the target could not be met due to challenges in the areas of poverty, insecurity, gender inequality, absence of inclusive governance and youth unemployment. This means that the MDGs implementation in Nigeria remains an unfinished business that needs to be rolled over to the successor SGDs framework. The family is always at the receiving end and thus bears the brunt of societal challenges which the SDGs target. This scenario has implications for all family-oriented disciplines including Home Economics. Scholars, researchers, practitioners, academics, graduates and students in these disciplines need to come together to explore the SDGs, the targets and other related issues including ways families are concerned and impacted. They should also be interested in issues relating to poverty reduction, youth employment, gender, security, among others. These issues informed the 2016 HERAN conference – which places a lot of emphasis on multi- and trans-disciplinary approach.
